How to Transfer Your GI Bill Benefits to Your Children

The GI Bill offers incredible education benefits for veterans, and one of its most valuable features is the option to transfer these benefits to family members, including your children. Here’s how to do it and what it covers.

 Eligibility for Transfer
To transfer your GI Bill benefits, you must have at least six years of service in the military and agree to serve an additional four years. The process requires approval from the Department of Defense before you can transfer any benefits.

Once approved, you can transfer unused GI Bill benefits to your child, including tuition assistance, a housing stipend, and money for books and supplies.

What Does the GI Bill Cover?
The GI Bill can cover up to 100% of in-state public school tuition for your child. It also includes funds for housing (BAH) while they attend school, along with a stipend for books and supplies. The housing allowance is based on the location of the school and the number of credits your child is taking. These benefits are available for up to 36 months of schooling, equivalent to four academic years.

Steps to Transfer Your GI Bill
1. Log in to MilConnect: This platform is where you can apply for the transfer of benefits.
2. Submit Your Transfer Request: Once logged in, choose the number of months of education benefits you want to transfer to your child.
3. Wait for Approval: The Department of Defense must approve your request.
4. Your Child Must Apply: After the benefits are transferred, your child needs to apply for the GI Bill through the VA using Form 22-1990E.

Transferring your GI Bill to your children is a powerful way to support their education, setting them up for a successful future without the burden of student loans. By covering tuition, housing, and supplies, it gives them the opportunity to pursue their academic dreams without financial stress.

How to Submit Form 22-1990E

1. Log into MilConnect: Your child must log into the MilConnect (https://milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil) platform.
2. Select the "Education" tab and locate Form 22-1990E (Application for Family Member to Use Transferred Benefits).
3. Submit the Form: Complete the form with the required information, which includes the school details and personal information.
4. Wait for VA Approval: Once the form is submitted, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will review the application and send a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) confirming the benefits.

 What Happens Next?
Once the VA approves the form and issues the COE, your child can present it to the school they wish to attend. The GI Bill benefits will cover up to 100% of in-state tuition, provide a monthly housing stipend, and offer a book and supplies allowance.

The GI Bill transfer process, though straightforward, provides a lifetime advantage to your children, ensuring they have access to education with fewer financial burdens. By following these steps and submitting Form 22-1990E, you’re empowering your child’s academic future.
